Never miss a great MMO post again!

I’m very pleased to announce a new feature here at the MMO Melting Pot – our new Weekly Digest.

I’m surprised it took me as long as it did to think of this one. Obviously, I check the MMO news every day, for a good long while – but I know that for most people it’s easy to miss a day or a post here and there – and suddenly everyone’s talking about something you didn’t see.

So, we’re now going to round up the week in MMOs every week in an email-based digest form. So, even if you’ve been busy, or you just straight out didn’t see a great post, you’ll be able to see all of the most influential topics and useful posts at the end of the week in one place.

We’ll also be using the Digest to:

  • Summarise the week in MMO news, including smaller bits that you might have missed.
  • Let you know about new MMO Melting Pot guides and features – I know sometimes our guides can be hard to spot.
  • And offer deals and special offers related to MMOs – we’re starting to have developers and publishers contact us about deals for our readers, and this is a great place to put them.

Of course, we’ll not be sharing email addresses with anyone or doing anything else dodgy. I’ve had the same email address for 13 years now, which means over time I’ve come to really, really hate spam.

Ow. Plus, guest post week next week!

Two short announcements today – one happy, one (ow, ow) not so much :)

The happy – I’m off on holiday for a week next week, so we’ve got a week of guest posts for you! Some of the most interesting and entertaining bloggers in the community will be sharing some of their favourite links and blog posts with you – should be a great week.

The less happy news – there will be slightly less posts than usual today. Unfortunately, apparently sensing the incoming holiday, at about 12:30am this morning my neck and right shoulder decided to lock up solid. I’m slowly physiotherapising them (it’s a word) back to health, but unfortunately it means that my writing capacity is a little more limited today whilst I let them heal.

Nonetheless, we will still have two posts today – enjoy, and see you in a week!

Call for guest posts – fancy stirring the Pot for a day?

I’m going on holiday next week. Nothing fancy, but I’m going to be spending most of it unplugged from the Interwebs with my girlfriend, and the remainder actually getting a chance to play things rather than write about them!

So, for next week we’ll be featuring guest posts – and if you’d like to write one, please let us know!

I’m looking for posts in line with the Pot’s usual theme of showcasing the best of the blogosphere – so, if there’s a discussion you think has been going unnoticed, some great posts you’d like to share with people, or some blogs you’d like to highlight, now’s your chance.

We don’t mind if you’re featuring posts we’ve talked about before or things that are new to us – it’s great to get a fresh voice either way. The posts don’t have to be long, but they can be if you like.

And, of course, we’ll feature a byline about your own blog and a link to it, if you have one.

So, if you’d like to take the chance to let the community know about some stuff you think is important, discussion-worthy or just really cool, now’s your chance!

Let us know in the comments below, via Twitter, or via email to mmomeltingpot at gmail dot com if you’d like to write us a guest post.

Tell me what you think of the new server!

We’re testing out a new server here at the Melting Pot – hosted by the guys at WP Engine, who claim they’ll be able to provide faster, more solid and more stable WordPress hosting than anyone else.

So, I’m really interested to hear how the server’s holding up for you. Is it fast? Can you get here reliably? Does anything look broken?

Let me know!

MMO Melting Pot will be going dark on the 18th to protest SOPA

Just a quick heads-up – the Melting Pot will be joining the widespread Internet protest day on Jan 18th, protesting SOPA . We’ll be effectively unavailable from noon to midnight GMT.

I’d rather not do this – I don’t like making information unavailable even for a short time – but SOPA, if passed, could be disastrous both for the Internet at large and personally for the Pot. Everything that BoingBoing says about SOPA’s effects on them apply to us too – we’d have to check every page of every site we ever link to to make sure there were no infringing links anywhere, which would probably be an impossible task, potentially meaning we’d just have to stop linking. We’d also probably have to disable or at least heavily moderate comments, and – the list goes on.

And ours is not even in the top 50% of serious chilling effects from the Act. It would also have a chilling effect on people who are trying to publicise police brutality, people who are trying to campaign for political change, people just trying to reach out and discover that the world isn’t as crazy as their circumstances make it appear – from abused children to victims of political oppression.

So, despite my misgivings, we’re going dark for a day, and I’d urge you to take action against SOPA . You can do something whether you’re in the USA or not – and thanks to SOPA’s far-reaching implications, this isn’t just a US issue.

The Piggie Awards: Coming Next Week!

Yes, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week we’ll be announcing the winners of the Piggie Awards for MMORPGs and MMORPG Blogging .

Monday will be Game Elements, Wednesday will be News and Affairs, and on Friday we’ll be announcing the Blogosphere Awards.

We’ll also be running the People’s Choice awards through the week, with the winners being announced on Monday week.

I’ll be contacting winners for during the week for a press release too, so if you get an email from me next week, that’s likely to be the reason!

We had originally intended to announce these this week, but then the entire MMO Melting Pot team went down with a nasty virus. We’ve only just recovered!

Awards coming next week!

Would you prefer to blog at your own domain name?

It’s Random Question Wednesday!

Yes, I’ve got an “I’m just wondering” question – and hence, I’m curious to see what people answer.

My question is thus:

If you blog about MMOs and you don’t have your own domain name – is that something you’d like, but don’t have for whatever reason, or do you actually prefer being at Blogspot, WordPress or similar?

[poll id=“15”]

I’m interested to hear what you think!

Melting Pot schedule over the Force-tive – erm, Festive – Period

‘Tis the season! And by that, I mean it’s the season to play SW:TOR, continuously, without pauses for anything except vital biological functions.

Oh, yeah, there’s some kind of midwinter festival thing too. Trees, presents. Nothing important.

No, seriously – happy Christmas, everyone! Over the festive season the Pot’s going to be on a slightly different schedule than usual, as I’m going to be spending a lot of it in a car driving up and down the UK visiting people, and hence will have to curtail my usual manic blog-reading.

We’ll be running as normal today and tomorrow, and will be running a smaller roundup on Wednesday and Thursday (largely because I’ll be posting from my phone on Weds!). Then, from the 23rd of December to the 2nd of January, we’ll be running a series of posts looking back over the last year in the MMOSphere – the best posts, the most interesting discussions, the biggest controversies. Taking it month by month, we’ll relive the last year – if you missed bits and pieces, you’ll find out what you missed, and if you were staunchly here through all of it, hopefully there’ll be some fun reminders in there!

Then, on January 3rd, we’ll be right back into the fray, starting with the announcements of nominations for the Piggie Awards for MMOs (have you nominated yet?).

It’s been a great year, everyone – looking forward to the next!

Trying something a bit different today…

I’m trying a different style of update today. As the blogosphere’s grown, and particularly with the high frequency of posts that we’re seeing at the moment, I’m often finding more posts I want to feature than I have space for in 3 segments on the Pot.

So, I figured I’d try a more “BoingBoing” style of update for a day or so, and see what people think. As a result, rather than the usual 1-2 list post approach, today you’ll see around 7 smaller updates, each one showcasing a single post. I don’t know how well this will work, but it works for the biggest curation site on the Web, so I figure it’s worth a try – and it’ll let me shine the spotlight a bit brighter on more posts.

Please do let me know what you think of this different approach! Do you like it? Hate it? Something else?
