WoW, Ducks, Timeouts, and a new SWTOR database site

by on January 27, 2012

It’s a bit quieter in the blogosphere today, but there’s still some interesting thinking going on. Ironyca’s recent article about solo play gets an interesting response, and there’s a new indie MMO site out there aiming to compete in the big leagues!

  • Gtfootf is worried by WoW players who assume that everything that looks like WoW must basically be WoW“The “WOW effect” is some thing akin to, “If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck.” Meaning if it feels like WOW and contains some of the same in-game elements as WOW it must be played like WOW. Unfortunately for us Blizzard has trivialized parts of the de-facto MMO game standard (WOW) and what we now consider normal really isn’t that normal after all.”
  • Syl at Raging Monkeys offers some additional thoughts on being able to be alone or anonymous in your MMO“Being able to withdraw from social circles isn’t only important because of free will and quality interaction though; there is a beneficial and invigorating aspect in taking time off – which is why it is such a shame that it should be such a difficult thing to admit and ask for.”
  • And there’s a new database site out there! Yes, http://knotor.com/ aims to compete with the mega-networks of Curse and ZAM, offering an independent database site (like WoWHead) for SWTOR. As an indie competing with the major networks ourselves, we’ve got a soft spot for this sort of thing – good luck to them!

What are your thoughts on the week’s hot MMO topics?
