Yep, it’s official – the new World of Warcraft expansion for 2012 will be Mists of Pandaria (we called it!), and the new playable race – for both Horde and Alliance – will be the Pandaren. So, what do we know about their available classes, racial abilities, and more?
Pandaren Classes
Pandaren will be able to play Monk , Hunter, Warrior, Shaman, Priest, Mage, and Rogue. They won’t be able to play as Death Knight, Druid, Paladin or Warlock characters.
Style
It’s no big surprise that a race of Pandas that do Kung-Fu might have some… obvious influences. And so it has gone.
Pandaren Starting area
The Pandaren starting area is a giant turtle. No, really. Pandaren who wished to see the world outside their continent take passage on the turtle, and head off into the world.
At the end of the Level 1 to Level 10 starting area, you’ll choose your faction – Horde or Alliance.
Pandaren Racial Abilities
They’re pretty much all about either food or inner calm. I like them already.
- Bouncy: Pandarens reduce fall damage by half.
- Inner peace: double rested XP.
- Gourmand: +15 to cooking.
- Epicurean: double stats from food buffs.
Their active racial ability is a crowd control ability with a 3 second duration, “Quaking Palm”.

I love it already.
2 times the XP? All the new alternate chars are gonna be Pandarens.
Its double rested exp not double exp
@Joe – Thanks, corrected (early reports had it as double XP). I thought that was a bit too good to be true!
Well if u keep your leaping kung fu panda in his inn really wont have a problem for ONLY rested XP cuz ull have double xp all the time + boas insane.
panda’s are just awesome but i prefer playing pygmy
@Hugh Hancock – It is actually double the duration of rested exp.
I m gonna be panderen/monk
For the horde
Ya i agree, i LOVE pandas but i want to try out the New Monk class+i grew up Horde……………….. FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (For the Win)
Wow, the slide down to total 12 year old child cartoon content continues. Pandas? Really? Riding giant sea turtles to leave their island?
Come on blizzard, can you at least pretend that adults form the majority of your player base? Can we have a little non G rated content for once? Pandas? Are you really trying to make a joke out of the whole game?
your aware that pandas have been in WoW since Warcraft III right? get your facts right before complaining about a race thats been around for a while
@maximill – you must not have played warcraft 3 so could you [insult redacted - editor] a little. Panderen are official lore.
You’re [insult redacted - editor] maximill, obviously you haven’t read any of the books or really dove yourself into Warcraft, this is what Warcraft is about a fantasy land of different races and yes pandas are in the books, you sound so ignorant, if you don’t like it stop playing@maximill -
Guys, I appreciate this is a topic that raises strong feelings one way or another, but please keep your comments on-topic and constructive. Personal insults aren’t appropriate and will be deleted.
I can’t wait till they come out. I think that a Pandaren Tank might be quite interesting. especially with the food buffs. Who know how much fun one may have peacefully eating ones way through a raid LOL
umm considering all the dead stuff in wotlk and the firy beast in cata i think pandas and a war between allies and hord isnt bad and quit calling them kung fu pandas like that stupid movie came out first, when in fact they been around the whole time. its not really childish at all; the tauren are just the same general concepts are they not??
here’s the thing panda’s are about inner calm/peace yet they can be a warrior I find that funny and very interested in the lore behind warriors
@someone else –
Tauren are the same hmm not really Taurens have been around since the game existed so not the same although you could argue they are like worgens but then they were around too the lore for the panda has been around however this is the first time anyone will actually see one.
@snakes005 –
I’ve def killed Pandarians before WoW was playable…
This will be the first time Pandarians are playable…
Racials sound too good to be true…
WTB Monk Talent Tree…
Stoked…
I wish the panda could be a druid that would be so cool in bear being a panda ripping everything in its way in half
I find it hard to believe that the Pandaren race will not be able to play as druids. I was actually REALLY hoping they would be able to.
Very disappointed…
It makes perfect sense that pandaren can’t be druids. The small society of pandaren that will be playable left their island before the night elf druids started teaching other races their ways. The pandaren who left have been secluded on their turtle island for a very long time. It’s that same fact that keeps them from being death knights; even worgen were around while the lich king was actively creating death knights, though it’s a bit of a stretch since they would be worgen created by Arugal(sp?) rather than worgen who took part in the battle for Gilneas. Pandaren weren’t there in time to become those classes. At all.
I love that Blizzard paid attention to their own lore for once and kept pandaren from becoming DKs and druids, even if it would be pretty cool to be a panda in bear form.
Well i thought they were able to be paladins, >.> well cuz you know they are peaceful and paladins are pretty peaceful is you ask me
Pandaren were only released in WC3 as an April Fools joke. So no, they weren’t a serious race of Azeroth. It’s interesting that Blizzard is pulling a whole new continent out of no where and basing it around this non-serious race, the pandaren.
Wait, Blizz is pulling a mystery continent/island out of nowhere? Didn’t see that one coming. /end sarcasm
I’ve heard about pandas being in previous lore, still not sure I like the idea of them running around. I’m cool with you adding cutesy races to the game, but do they HAVE to be let into Org? I mean.. we put up with the belf population but come on, you win these guys at carnivals. Nothing says GRRRRR like awwww?
Fear the fluffy. Remember the fluffy. Always remember…
“Pandaren were only released in WC3 as an April Fools joke.” -a troll
Really? They totally had me fooled into thinking Pandaren Brewmaster was an actual, persisting, playable hero throughout one of the campaigns in WCIII The Frozen Throne (before the updates even), along with Rexxar, Rokhan and Cairne Bloodhoof. Next you’re going to tell me Rexxar and Cairne were April Fool’s jokes too? That makes Draenor, Thunder Bluff, and Tauren pulled out of nowhere too. And the big blue aliens with face tentacles that actually do seem to come out of nowhere (Draenei). Three other pandaren also appeared in two other campaigns in FT. Are you saying all of WCIII The Frozen Throne was one giant April Fool’s joke?
/end bad attempt at sarcasm.
@f. It was initially an April Fool’s joke that Pandas were going to be another playable race in WC3. The fans liked it so much they put them in as neutral mercs.
